出生于1962年10月，在江苏省江阴市接受中小学教育，于1980年考入北京大学西语系。期间患病休学一年，1985年从北京大学毕业，留校任职。
1991年9月，俞敏洪从北大辞职，进入民办教育领域，先后在北京市一些民办学校从事教学与管理工作。
1993年11月16日，俞敏洪创办了北京市新东方学校，担任校长，从最初的几十个学生开始了新东方的创业过程。截止到2000年，新东方学校已经占据了北京约80%，全国50%的出国培训市场，年培训学生数量达20万人次。同时新东方在其他领域的发展也相当迅速，目前新东方学校的教育部门包括：国外考试培训部、国内考试培训部、基础英语一部(听说)、基础英语二部(新概念)、实用英语部、高自考培训部、少儿英语部、小语种培训部、电脑培训部等；新东方学校的服务部门包括：学生阅览室、学生信箱服务、出国咨询处、公证处、订票处等等。新东方目前分别在上海、广州设立了分校，将新东方的精神与教育理念在全国范围内传播。
在2000年为止，俞敏洪在教育过程中出版了数本英语教学与学术著作，其中包括：《GRE词汇精选》(学生中称为“红宝书”)、《GRE词汇逆序小辞典》、《英语词根词缀记忆大全》、《英语现代文背诵文选》等，主编了《英语我爱背单词》光盘、《英语GRE词汇大突破》光盘、《GRE模考》光盘、《GMAT模考》光盘等。成为中国颇有名气的英语教学与管理专家，推动了中国留学教育事业的发展，被社会誉为“留学教父”。俞敏洪的办学事迹被中外众多报刊及杂志报导。
2000年，俞敏洪及领导团队成立了东方人投资有限公司，向教育产业化运作迈开了一大步。同年，新东方与联想合作，由联想注资5000万，新东方出品牌资源各占50%股份成立了联东伟业科技发展有限公司，专门从事新东方远程教学。这是新东方与外界第一次的正规合作，新东方的教育理念与教育精神通过现代化科技以更快地速度渗透进社会。
一路高唱着“从绝望中寻找希望，人生终将辉煌”的俞敏洪老师，终于带领新东方成功上市，而且刚刚卡在9月8日“红筹”公司境外上市“时间窗口”收拢之前。据测算，上市后，44岁的俞敏洪资产至少高达1.21亿美元，可谓“中国最富有的教师”。
